Moving from agency to in-house communications

The move from agency to in-house work changes the rhythm and the source of complexity. Agency practitioners may be used to multiple clients and fast handovers; in-house teams live with decisions over time and often operate closer to internal politics and operational detail.

Before moving, ask how communication is represented in leadership, who owns employee communication, how risk decisions are made and what evidence the function uses. Learn the organisation’s business model and frontline realities. Internal credibility depends on understanding operations, not only delivering content.

Agency strengths remain valuable: prioritisation, creative briefing, stakeholder management and presenting options under pressure. The adjustment is to build deeper institutional memory and challenge colleagues constructively when an action creates reputational risk.

Create a 90-day learning plan covering people, products, processes, recurring issues and measurement. Listen before redesigning everything. Success is not a quieter calendar; it is the ability to connect communication with durable organisational choices.

Editorial note: Commission paired perspectives from Ghanaian agency and in-house practitioners.
